The basic formats of writing an SOP (Statement of Purpose)
You can write your SOP with subheadings or without subheadings. But SOP with subheading is more readers-friendly. It’s the latest trend.
Some universities will list a questionnaire/essay that you must complete and submit. It will be considered as your SOP. Others simply expect you to submit a statement of purpose along with other documents when you apply for admission. In this case you may follow these points to include in your SOP.
- Make the start interesting, anecdotal perhaps, referencing it and linking it to the course, your personality and your study path followed by career goal.
- Explain your study life, degrees you have obtained and study related projects and internships. Do not give a bald statement. Elaborate as to your responsibilities and what you accomplished.
- Create a heading and separate paragraphs to show your extra-curricular activities like sports, dancing, singing, competitive nature, prizes won and so on.
- Write a separate paragraph on your leadership qualities, team playing ability and community service to show a different side of your personality.
- Be precise and specific about why you intend to pursue this course. Go to university website and the course and study well and elaborate on the curriculum and how it chimes in with your proposed career path. Likewise, study and research the university and elaborate on why you chose it above others. Write a few sentences on why you chose the country where the university is located.
- Write a couple of short paragraphs about your career goal which should include immediate career path following completion of the course, career in five years and in ten years.
