Sometimes, life and work show you the way forward. It is so in my case. On completion of my B. Tech degree in 2018 I was chosen to works as a Python Developer at Pie Infosystems in Gurugram. That laid the foundation for my journey towards a career in data science. This, and later work experiences, along with my project work, all were about data science, analytics and artificial intellige, spurring my desire to specialize in this field and acquire professional qualifications.
Why this university and this country
It did take me some time and effort to arrive at the choice of Ryerson. I chose this university for its acclaimed reputation in data science, the fine atmosphere it creates for students, excellent faculty and ample scope for studies in the library. Its degree has value. Graduates have gone on to make a mark in their career. That it is located in Canada makes it even better. Canada welcomes students and offers a variety of life experiences in a congenial atmosphere. I will learn much from my stay in this country.
Experience
I graduated in 2018 and got my first job as a Python Developer at Pie Infosystems in Gurugram. I worked on a project for Lava for one year during which time I gained skills in Python and SQL Tableau. That sparked my interest in AI and data science.
Fortunately for me my next job was at Intel where I further advanced my skills and used Python for development.
I then jumped at the chance to work for Cyborg Cyber Forensics and Information security in Noida. I worked as a tech engineer and took on challenging roles in cyber security. I found out that I still needed to learn more and hence my decision to acquire the Masters in Data Science degree.
I then took on an ecommerce project in 2019 in which I put to use knowledge in data science and analytics to help the operator derive actionable insights and thus streamline processes.
The Covid lockdown led me to work with ZS Associates in Pune as a consultant where I handled two clients: Gilead Sciences and Choice Hotels International. I took on and completed a Bot-Email monitoring project for Choice Hotels. For Gilead I delivered an optical character recognition solution.
Classes/projects
While working for CCFIS I joined and completed certificate course in Data Science from Coding Blocks.
I still look back with pride on the e-commerce project where I actually put to work all the knowledge gained in data science, however limited it was. That I delivered value gives me satisfaction but I still feel humble because there is still a lot I have to learn.
Leadership/community experience
I do lead an active social life and have other interests besides studies. I love to play the piano and I am a good speaker, being nominated twice for the Best Speaker at the Noida Expressway Toastmasters Club. During college and while at work I led teams and the position taught me leadership as well as the value of being considerate. This proved to be of help when I undertook relief work during the lockdown.
Values I bring to the institution
I have an inquiring mind, always ready to explore different avenues of learning, never content with staying at one level. I hope to transfer my infectious enthusiasm to other students, study well and do the university proud and leave a mark, however small it might be.
Career goals and how this course will help
My chief career goal is to become a data analyst and scientist, unravelling the hidden gems underneath a mountain of big data and use the intelligence to further business interests if I gain a job in industry or to work for the government and use my knowledge to bring about improvements in the economy and in people’s lives. This course will help me to get started by giving me skills and knowledge I currently lack. It will open doors to further learning and lead me on the path to becoming a specialist.
