SOP Example for Master of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene
Statement of Purpose
Course: Master of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene
Institution: University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada
I am privileged to get nurtured in a home that advocates Environmental Hygiene. And the instinct gets inculcated in me. My father works as a Health Inspector and transplanted his concepts of hygiene and health to us. We grew up and followed our paths but that base was always there. I went on to study mechanical engineering. Inspired by my father I took on M.Tech in environmental engineering and, now, I am focused on environmental hygiene as my area of specialization, my future career path. It has brought me to this course.
Education and its application must relate to people and community we live in is my belief. As a qualified mechanical engineer my work had to do with machines and materials in which people were classified as contributors of labour and as consumers. Something was missing. Manufacturing also generates waste with a negative impact on people and environment.
These thoughts led me to consider specializing in environmental hygiene and possibly work towards improvement in environment and health of people. I wish to study all I can about environmental hygiene and hygiene in workplaces. It has brought me to this institution and to this program. I find this program blends both areas and offers advanced theoretical and practical training to students. Once I complete this course I shall be fully capable of addressing this vital specific area in the overall manufacturing scenario in our country.
I have been spending months cogitating on the right university that would give me knowledge and capability to pursue my career path. It was not easy but finally I chose the University of British Columbia. The course is of the right duration and condenses modern thought and technologies into a practical and flexible curriculum with options on topics. Besides, degrees from this university have value and its faculty is held in high regard. I am sure I will enjoy accessing the library and research facility as much as I will love to interact with industry professionals here.
Canada is one of the best countries for students. Students are welcome here and find the overall atmosphere peaceful as well as safe. The country is home to people from different cultures and offers a chance for me to acquire knowledge beyond studies and to grow my personality. I am sure I will return to India a better, refined individual.
I started work as an environmental engineer with Sartime Horological Pvt Ltd in Chennai in June 2017. Thereafter, in April 2019 I joined Aquatech Asia, a company engaged in offering consultancy in environmental engineering. In November I joined CBRE South Asia Pvt Ltd, Chennai, as a Facility executive and am in charge of equipments and processes related to environmental law and regulation adherence as well as worker safety and occupational health. This also sparked my interest to become professionally qualified, a reason I now seek to join this course.
For my B.Tech engineering course I developed a project on Regeneration of Braking systems with reference to battery powered vehicles.
At the moment I am pursuing my M.Tech course on a part-time basis and for this I am working on a project related to studies of environment within manufacturing and its impact on worker health, referenced to chemical process and textile units.
I have a diploma in industrial safety obtained from Annamalai University.
I am a Zonal level football player and am captain of our college football team. It is also refreshing to exercise my mind which I do by reading and taking part in quiz competitions. I have won the second place in national level quiz competition in engineering subjects.
Apart from these I also help my father in his social work related to raising awareness about hygiene in the underprivileged sections of society. My role is to teach those who work in industrial units to take care about their health and safety especially when they work in hazardous environments or with hazardous materials.
I am a bright student and I also am active physically. At heart I am a caring person, deeply concerned about wellbeing of people. It is this driving concern that leads me to take on this course on occupational and environmental hygiene. I am sure I will be able to do good for people and also bring repute to the institution by crediting it for having given me the right start in life.
I will return to India and probably work with companies directly offering environmental consultancy to engineering units. I may take up a job with government as a health inspector and enlighten manufacturing industries about implementation of appropriate standards to safeguard environment and worker health. I may work for NGOs and derive satisfaction. About 10 years or so later, I will form my own consultancy company and assist governments as well as industries to improve processes leading to positive effects on environment and occupational health. This course gives me that vital professional knowledge and qualifications to stand tall and deliver.
