Example of common app essay for university admission

I remember reading the story of King Bruce and the hopeless situation he was in. He was inspired and encouraged when he saw a spider attempting to spin a web, failing, trying and failing and trying again. He took heart and succeeded in his venture. That story always stays in my mind when I was trying to cope up in the process of transition from Aeronautical Engineering to Computer Science.

I have strong mathematical and problem-solving skills. I worked for a year in a company named BAIL where I was given challenging tasks. I did have knowledge of information technologies and used all the knowledge I had but I did not have professional training and that proved to be an obstacle. Still, by staying up nights, accessing online resources and forums and working on the problem I managed to come up with a solution and met the requirements. It was a mountain to climb. Many times I despaired that I would not be able to manage. Still, I did not give up hope. I persisted and kept on learning and trying out ways and means. As they say, genius is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration. One must work hard and stay on track.

Today, I am happy that I have successfully formed the foundation in computer science because of my perseverance. And now I am all set to acquire higher education in the same field.

My Transition to Tech

Aircrafts were my childhood passion. I completed undergraduate studies in aeronautical engineering. However, I dared to step into the world of Information Technology.  I firmly believe that by using the latest information technology, I can take aeronautical engineering to the next level. Technologies are inter connected. My background in aeronautical engineering will be an added advantage.

I decided to delve a deeper into it and what I found turned my life around. The entire world today pivots around data, whether it is aviation or IT. There is so much that computer science can do to improve matters. It also involves considerable mathematical ability. I have a natural talent for mathematics and that set me thinking. Why should I not use this natural talent? There is a general saying that when one does what comes naturally to them then they excel. I believe in this and decided to switch lanes to IT. I can put to full use my skills in mathematics, problem solving and analytics once I master the topic of computer science. I believe I can advance rapidly in this direction. There also is much that can be done by way of innovation in IT and here again I feel that I can use my talents.

It is a considered decision arrived at after much thought. I am set on studying computer science and will make a success of it.
