In the world today, that is so data-intensive, the usage and preservation of data or information has become unavoidable and critical. As more people from various backgrounds connect to the internet and register themselves digitally, the cache of information grows exponentially. As I worked and learned with several organisations, I eventually developed a strong interest in data science. Throughout my academic career, I have consistently been a good student. In 2018, I graduated from ………… College of Engineering with a CGPA of ……….. Following that, I pursued an M. Tech. in Data Science from …….., where I will graduate in 2022. My grade point average was …………
Why MS in Data Science?
Firstly, a postgraduate degree in Data Science is both exciting and challenging to me. Despite already completing a short course in Data Science, I have decided to pursue another post graduate degree after considering all relevant factors. During my time working as an Azure Data Engineer, I had joined an online M.tech program called WILP M.Tech in data science to learn for my work. Here, I solved Descriptive, Predictive and Prescriptive problems and completed Deep Learning assignments. I however require more intensive training to be Industry ready. I chose the MS Data Science program because I believe the next step in my career is to work and learn closely with experts and academics. This would also help me train myself for an eventual PhD program. I also believe pursuing the course at a prestigious American institution would be a completely different experience that will boost my growth. I will be able to work with the top professors and learn from working in state-of the art labs and by meeting a diverse group of perspectives.
Why the USA?
The USA is well-known for being a torch bearer in the domains of IT and Data Science, with household brands such as Apple and IBM being born in the country. I’m also looking forward to seeing and exploring Silicon Valley, which has been one of the most important historical sites in my field. I would want to be in an environment where I could learn from the examples all around me. I am also really pleased to be exposed to international job and education standards.
Classes/ Projects
My undergraduate coursework had subjects such as Mechanical engineering and the likes. It was during my PG course that I took up courses in data science and analysis. It was during my studies that I discovered my passion for working with big sets of data. I believe all of these encounters added to my knowledge and contributed to my interest in Data Science.
I pursued several certificate courses outside my college as well. These include Microsoft certified Azure Data Fundamentals, ‘Performing Real Time Analysis with Stream Analytics’ which was offered by Coursera, ‘Machine Learning’ by LinkedIn Skill Assessment. I have been awarded the Udemy Certificate of Competition for Statistics for Data Science and Business Analysis as well as for Python for Data Science and Machine Learning Bootcamp.
Experiences
I was hired by Infosys at the completion of my undergraduate studies. I started here in March 2019 and was here till August 2021. During my time here, I received considerable training in Python and SQL. I also worked as an automation engineer at GE for four months. I also obtained the Infosys Global Agile Developer Certification.
As a result, I started a new project as an Azure Data Engineer for my customer, Movement Mortgage. As a result, I learned about ETL/ELT processing. In my three and a half years of experience with Azure data engineering, I used tools such as Azure data factory, Databricks, SSMS, and Power BI. I learned about machine learning while working as a data engineer. This was the point at which I became highly interested in science. I began researching Machine Learning. I began reading papers and notebook scripts on Kaggle to better understand why various strategies were used to solve a problem. I used libraries such as pandas, matplotlib, seaborn, and sklearn.
Following this, I joined Accenture in August 2022 and worked for our client Sodexo for 6 months as a Data Engineer before moving on to a new project for client Page as a Data Analyst.
Azure Data Factory, Power BI, SSMS, Visual Studio, and Databricks were the tools I used the most. I also honed my skills in Pspark and SQL. Overall, I learned a great deal from my colleagues and seniors at both Infosys and Accenture. I sincerely appreciate the great experience I’ve had. These encounters undoubtedly contributed significantly to my interest in data science.
Leadership/Community experience
I have always appreciated taking part in cultural activities. I frequently assisted in the organization of cultural events hosted by my school as well as college. Along with enjoying my role and meeting new people, I also learnt key lessons about leadership, unity, responsibility, teamwork, and humility from this experience. These are the principles I aspire to uphold in the future.
My Values
I am someone who has come to believe in hope and in failures being the greatest learning milestones. This belief was particularly influenced by a recent event in my life when I had not scored well in C language during my first semester. During the second semester I worked hard to understand C language through various sources like books, websites, w3 schools, geeksforgeeks and parallelly. I had C++ in my second semester. This period introduced me to the world of programming. I was able to do programming for both C and C++ comfortably by the end of the semester. By end of it all, I became confident in basic programming and OOP concepts in both languages !
This experience has taught me to take hurdles in my stride and power through them. I also have a strong sense of adventure and believe that I thrive in challenging situations. I’ve always sought to expand my knowledge by putting myself in new and growth-inducing settings.
Career Goals
India is gradually shaping up to be a leader in IT infrastructure and as a Data-intensive economy. Therefore there is an urgent need for data professionals across several avenues. Due to my interest and the scope of the subject, I believe I will be able to contribute significantly with my research. I am excited for the future of my country and hope to contribute my talents and qualifications towards the development of my country.
