Sample Statement of Purpose to Pursue Chemical Engineering Course

Statement of Purpose

One can only understand the depth of the river when he dips into it. We can fully realize something when we actually start doing it. It is better to make a switch halfway and achieve one’s objective rather than go through and live to regret it for doing something that I actually didn’t want. This applies to me in my decision to switch to Purdue to complete my BS in Chemical Engineering. Currently I am enrolled at the University of Illinois in Chicago and expect to complete the BS Chemical Engineering course by May 2023. I now realize that this university does not offer me what I need and that Purdue does.

My educational journey

My schooling was at …………….. School in Delhi from where I passed with a score of ……….. in ………. Thereafter, I joined the University of Illinois to pursue the BS in Chemical Engineering.

During my school days I was Vice Head Boy and participated in the school drama group, being in charge of a group of 20. This leadership quality continued when I joined university studies. I took part in Chem-E car competition organized by AIChe and was ranked second from six participating universities. I worked for a research project related to the food industry and also served as Peer Leader at MSLC at the University where I currently study.

My current GPA score is ………….

I have completed coursework relating to calculus I & II, calculus based chemistry, calculus based physics and English composition to match eligibility standards of Purdue.

Why I wish to transfer to Purdue

As such there is nothing much to fault with the Illinois University. However, I find Purdue to be a better choice since it offers more choices in electives and the university enjoys an unparalleled reputation to promoting research and development.

I am also inspired by the life of the famous alumni of this university like Akira Suzuki, who won the Nobel Prize in chemistry. Indian chemist Mr. CNR Rao who is also an alumni of this university is my idol. He was awarded the highest civilian award of India (Bharat Ratna).

Purdue offers excellent training and it has been turning out leaders in the field of chemical engineering since decades. Its faculty members are renowned and it will be a privilege for me to learn under their tutelage. What impresses me very much is that Purdue uses research in chemical engineering for practical applications and its interdisciplinary approach creates well rounded chemical engineers. This is something that I really want to achieve in my life. I also like it that Purdue offers graduates opportunities to pursue MS and PhD level programs.

I am positive that the switch to Purdue is the best decision to take since I will be benefited as per my expectations.

My objective

The obvious objective is to land a well paying job. However, there is more to learning than using it as a means to earn money. Chemicals are at the root of industrial activity and life in general. I hope to return to India and work in the chemical engineering field or in petrochemicals or in the food industry and use my knowledge for greater good of society. Purdue will equip me with knowledge and skills to help me achieve my objective.

Why I like chemical engineering

Purdue’s chemical engineering undergraduate course will help me to use not only the science of chemicals but also engineering and mathematics to resolve problems and, hopefully, innovate.

One issue of major concern to me is that chemical processes lead to pollution and environmental concerns. This is where I wish to concentrate and use my engineering skills to mitigate, reduce or even avoid pollution of the environment. Cost is a major factor with small scale chemical engineering units not being able to afford modern solutions. Maybe I can research and develop low cost yet effective, widely adaptable solutions.
