Statement of Purpose

Education leads to work and work can also unleash a new phase of learning a realization. I discovered that regular study courses did not adequately empower me for what I encountered at work and working in Vedanta opened my eyes to real life work situations and practical side of marketing as well as management. I found myself lacking in several aspects and realized that the only way forward is to study more as per the latest international standard and gain more capabilities in order to spiral upwards in my chosen profession.

What I wish to study and why this program

Marketing, they say, is science and art and something one also learns from experience. I currently work as Market Analyst, a job that is satisfying but one which also creates an innate desire to do more and be better. I wish to join the Masters of Science in Marketing and focus on becoming an expert in market analysis. New technologies are the favored tools of top market analysts and these tools help to derive better actionable intelligence.

I wish to stay on top and current with current technologies. I am sure the intended course will fill the lacuna and empower me to give my best in my current job or in any future job I may take on. This program appears tailor made to impart knowledge of analysis as science and as technique. I am sure it will add considerably to my knowledge store and give me better capabilities to stand shoulder to shoulder with the world’s best analysts. I must say I do need to brush up skills and learn all about applications of artificial intelligence, ML and neural networks to market analysis and be able to actually predict movements.

Why this university and this country

Of all the universities I have evaluated, the University of Southern California stands out from the rest in terms of facilities for students, in terms of faculty, in terms of research, in terms of induction of latest technologies into course curricula and, of course, all this is capped by its degree that holds high value. I have seen numerous graduates doing exceptionally well in their careers. The Marshall School of Business ticks all the right boxes and is light years ahead.

As for USA, I have high respect for its principles and approaches to studies and work. I have always admired the bold initiatives and inventive genius of people. The world has much to thank the USA for. If USA leads the world in many spheres it is mainly due to its standards of education, encouragement of free thought and support for innovation. It will be my privilege to be at the University and in the USA.

Experience

I joined Vedanta Resources as a Market Analyst in May 2018 and am currently working for the same Company. During the 4.5 years of work here I was engaged in several key activities. Worthy of mention are my projects. The first was as a Project Lad for Asia’s first galvanized rebar used in construction, a product of particularly use in coastal areas where the air is corrosive.

My second project was development of specifications for tendering by RDSO division of Indian Railways. My inputs paved the way for remodification of technical specifications of zinc coated rails used for railways.

My routine work involved market studies, customer satisfaction surveys, enhancement of business efficiency based on analysis and keeping track of emerging market trends.

Classes/projects

During my engineering studies I took on two projects. One pertained to Car Door closing effort measurement device. The project was in association with Volkswagen and used automated sensor based system to measure closing force, leading to modifications in car door and hinge design as well as latch spring tension.

My second project focused on Magnetic braking system for use in motor vehicles. This was a novel approach to develop failsafe yet maintenance-free braking system.

For one month I was with Tata Motors and worked on design of a Launch Sales Kit for commercial vehicles. The kit was put to use for launch of Tata commercial vehicles in the Middle Eastern countries of Oman and Qatar.

I topped my degree in mechanical engineering with a post graduate diploma in marketing from the Welingkar Institute in Mumbai in 2018 with CGPA of 7.5/10.

Leadership/community experience

I have always been a gregarious personality, exploring possibilities, building relationships and collaborating with students first when I was a student and then as a team member when I started work with Vedanta. My focus is on giving 100% to my work and I have a no-compromise approach. I am meticulous and particularly give attention to details. In college I led a team to take part in inter-college competitions. At work I lead my team, guiding them, helping them and encouraging them to do their best.

Values I bring to the institution

I work hard and aim for the top. One must excel and make the most of time at one’s disposal. However, I also believe in a broader perspective of life, caring and sharing, being one important part. I know that the institution expects students to do their best and score. I also know that institutions expect students to contribute to knowledge store, through research or other activities that will help future batch of students and enrich their studies. I hope to do just that.

Career goals and how this course will help

I believe that market analysis is crucial for business at all stages: from concept to routine operations if a business wishes to forge ahead. My immediate goal is to obtain the Masters degree and get into a more challenging position which would test my learning and skills. Eventually, my long term goal is to become an independent analyst and offer my services to industries in India as per international standards and help them to be globally competitive. Nothing will give me more happiness than to see my country make progress. This course will endow me with skills I need to achieve my intended goal.
