SOP for Electronics background student to study MS in computer science
Environment shapes the personality of a man. I have grown up in a corporate environment as my father works for a company. He nurtured such an environment at our home where each decision was taken after careful analysis. He trained us to take all decisions in life wisely. When I was in school my father assigned a problem to me and asked me to think through to a solution, considering various possibilities. He taught me to think, analyze a situation on the basis of the available data and then draw conclusions instead of straightaway jumping to an assumed decision. My desire to pursue data analytics has roots in my childhood.
Though I have a background in electronics and communication engineering I have been drawn more towards computers, especially use of computing resources to analyse data. It is a sort of hobby interest to keep track of developments in business analytics and how it has moved from historical to real time analytics using artificial intelligence. I wish to study data and business analysis in order to gain expertise to work in this field and derive actionable insights that will help business or governments take the right decisions. This program has all the elements that I need to gain capabilities.
Why this university and this country
It has taken me some effort to sift through course structure and syllabus offered by different universities. I find this university offers exactly what I need to pursue my career goal. Additional factors that convinced me are the university’s reputation, its fine faculty, excellent library and access to industry professionals. I believe this university’s degree holds value and its graduates are doing well in their careers. As for Canada I find its welcoming, non-discriminatory nature a huge plus. There is peace, freedom from fear and an open atmosphere conducive to studies. I am sure I will learn from people, imbibe the culture and emerge a better individual.
Experience
I do not hold a regular job. I did complete my B.Tech in ECE from Vardhaman College in 2018 with 71.3% marks. Since then I have provided some consultancy but, chiefly, I have been preparing for the shift to computing and data analytics by spending time on learning on my own.
Classes/projects
I loved project work. My first one was a mini project on Automated Teller Machine designed in Labview. I came up with an ATM app that permitted users to create an account and carry out transactions such as money deposit and withdrawal using RFID card verified with a PIN.
My second one was a major one, Enhanced Accident Prevention System in Underground Collieries created in LabView. The project involved use of CNG sensor, electronic circuitry and controllers for the Blower to pump air into underground mines in order to displace methane. The project included fail safe backup and alarm systems.
My tiny projects included one on Water Management Systems and another on Regulated Power Supply.
I have made it a point to attend classes. One such is a workshop I attended on IoT and embedded systems. The workshop on Networks by Path Creators gave me insights into various kinds of networks currently in use. IUCEE-EPICS conducted a workshop on design thinking and that gave me food for thought as design being integral to engineering.
Leadership/community experience
I am quite active in various college campus based activities. In 2017 I organised and led the college cultural event Ortus. I also did my fair share of work in organising blood donation camps and youth conventions. I volunteered for the Fourth International Conference on Transformations in Engineering Education besides participating in Code Hunt in the Acumen CSFest15 at Vasavi College of Engineering.
Values I bring to the institution
I am sincere, dedicated and possess an inquiring analytical mind. It is a quality of mine to persevere and stay committed but with a flexible mindset. Besides doing well in studies I also take part in life activities and hope to enhance reputation of the institution where I will study.
Career goals and how this course will help
Data analytics is crucial for business and for government. It helps businesses derive actionable intelligence to make them competitive. I may get to work in the private sector of India as a data analyst and help to effect improvements. India is all set to emerge as the 5th largest economy in the world opening up lucrative opportunities. It would be more to my interest to use my data analytical skills to work for improvements in Government and transform agriculture, healthcare and education. This course, by giving me skills to carry out my responsibilities, will help me to pursue my career with success and deliver meaningful results.
I hope you will consider my application favourably and will be pleased to grant admission to me for which I shall be much obliged.
