Statement of Purpose (SOP) for Information Systems from University of Nebraska

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Name of the Student: …………………….

Course Applied for: Information Systems

Country: USA

The world that we currently live in has indeed changed. The dependence over technology is astounding, but quite fascinating to say the least. In an all-round digital era, where technology has brought distances closer, convenience higher/faster and relations stronger, it is the inevitable truth that the knowledge of information systems is crucial for the advancement of human civilization. My experience in Computer Science Education and research work with which I had been occupied with (including project-based experience and internship) in my academic career substantiates two vital aspects. One is that the margins of efficiency are at an all-time high specifically for the IT world. Secondly, businesses worldwide are looking out for information systems-based solutions to keep up with the ongoing surge of competition. Keeping such primary aspects in mind, my desire to explore and establish myself in such a field doesn’t merely come out from the need of a well-established career, but to establish my individual self in the digital era as an innovative genius who understands every parameter and technical aspect regarding Information Systems (ranging form hardware, software, data management systems and decision-making tools). In my pursuit of learning Information Systems, the ultimate goal is to articulate and substantiate innovation, and to bridge together gaps that are still persistent in today’s rapidly growing era.

Firstly, my experience in graduation equips me with a skill-set that is appropriate for the aforementioned field. VLSI Design, Microwave and Optical Communication, Computer Networks and the various languages in Computer Science, such as C, C++, Python, Programming in HDL and Data Structures were subjects that I studied. My expanse of knowledge grew vehemently as the academic pursuit wasn’t limited towards theory but also several practical applications and projects. I am currently well-acquainted with the field and believe in growing more with the same without having to make major academic shifts. The projects that I have additionally been a part of also strengthens my desire and need to fulfill my academic dreams in Information Systems, projects which I shall talk about ahead in this SOP. As mentioned earlier, the scope of Information Systems is massive in this current world, and with such a basis of technical and theoretical knowledge I believe the aforementioned field best suits my interests as well as the course of innovation that humanity is being driven towards, i.e. in business, domestic processes, urbanization, so on and forth.

Why the USA?

The United States of America is undoubtedly the first and best place to study Information Systems as it is home to some of the giants in the sector, ranging from Apple, to Microsoft, Google and many more. The inception and growth of the digital revolution (with information systems and technology) in the US is renowned, not to forget the existence of Silicon Valley. In my current field of interest, it is crucial for me to explore Silicon Valley, in order to attain the heights of success that I aspire to get. For such reasons, the USA is my first and foremost preference to study and settle down. Furthermore, the allowances of facilities and the standard of education itself is what attracts me to apply for the same.

Classes/ Projects

As mentioned already, my undergraduate programme had the following courses, VLSI Design, Microwave and Optical Communication, Computer Networks, C, C++, Python, Programming in HDL and Data Structures. In addition to that, I had worked on several projects that didn’t merely test my skill-set as a student but also my critical sense of thought, where I would explore the possibilities of innovation and convenience. One such project is Vehicle Movement Based Street Light. In an age of increasing mobility and developing infrastructure, the idea of smart traffic systems within an urbanizing zone is indeed interesting. In this regard, I had been a part of movement-based traffic lighting systems that would not only turn things to automation but favourably reduce the possibility of accidents or inconvenience amidst the rising surge of traffic in urban spaces.

Another project, Automated Watering Plants Using Arduino Uno delved somewhat towards the botanical/biological field, but sought to contribute towards the methodological sphere of research, in the quest to bridge certain gaps of understanding and bring together the agencies of human-operated and technology-assisted processes within a scientific environment.

The final project, Breast Cancer Prediction In Mammogram On Machine Learning, relating with the medical field was indeed one of my best experiences. The prowess of Information Systems and Technology could only be realized when initiatives are taken to address humane problems that conventional sources weren’t able to conveniently or efficiently detect. Under such regards, I believe my participation in such a project had honed my technical skills to the point that I could indulge in Information Systems to create better technologies for the greater good of firms, organizations and society as a whole. To conclude my projects, I also did my internship in Azure Cloud Computing.

Experiences

My experience as an intern in Azure Cloud Computing grants me first hand experiences of participating in an active work environment. My projects, on the other hand, add towards my experience of learning as well as contributing to the aforementioned areas (of which the varied projects were a part of). Furthermore, I devoted a significant amount of time researching Machine Learning, which seemingly has been in scholarly limelight as well. It gave me insights into what people have been talking and doing things about. An idea of the current scenario is certainly necessary for us as students to know where to start and what to attain (objectively).

Leadership/Community experience

In community experience I had been a part of various events organized by the department. So, I have actively participated in academic as well as co-curricular events. Such experience taught me the lessons of collective learning, teamwork and the importance of organization in any or every aspect. I also share a keen interest in playing Cricket. I had been a part of tournaments and have contributed significantly to the collective effort of athleticism the team had shown alongside me.

My Values

I am always changing individually. In other words, as a learner I do not believe my pursuit of inheriting knowledge has an end. If I think otherwise I would probably stop inheriting knowledge at one point and contain myself with a limited knowledge-base or skill-set. However, that is not the case, when it comes to knowledge. I believe I am always a learner, and my mindset remains as it was the first day I started my academic career, which is to learn with openness and forever inherit knowledge to not merely consume but to innovate or channel in an efficient way. In this manner, not only would I be able to contribute to the betterment of society but also establish myself as a person of noteworthy features (both intellectual and technical).

Career Goals

On a personal level, I want to excel in my career to distinguish myself apart in the particular field I strive to succeed in. This means adamant hard work, in-depth research, thorough studying/research and of course a passionately-driven sense of self. With such facets I wish to become an iconic figure in the world of Information Systems and the IT realm as a whole. Of course, it would be far-fetched to think I may become influential in the Silicon Valley as of now, but as no harm is there in thinking or aspiring, I do wish to strive as much as i could to one day reach there (at the peak) and share the workspace with the giants of the digital revolution.

Whereas in a broader sense or context, India itself is going through a surge of digital innovation, ranging from the public to the private sector. So, it is inevitable that if I flourish in the field, I would be able to boost/contribute towards the aspect of convenience and innovation in my home country as well. The Data Intensive Economy is growing, Information Systems are widely preferred and most importantly, the Internet of Things is all around us as the basic resource or amenity. As a part of our growing lives, it is vital to set a career that is centric to the digital revolution, something that I have established as part of my career goal as well.
