What are your reasons for wanting to study in Wales at your chosen university and programme of study?
Cardiff University has two Nobel Laureates in the faculty namely Robert Huber and Sir Martin Evans. Moreover, Mr. John M. Pearce, Professor of Psychology has been elected as Fellows of the Royal Society. I look for the latest curriculum that incorporates outcomes of research and ongoing studies. This university and the programme I have chosen match my expectations. The course is modern and updated. Wales is a charming country and offers a peaceful atmosphere conducive to studies, another factor which decided me to study here rather than elsewhere.
I currently work as an occupational therapist helping people afflicted with multiple sclerosis. This is of specific interest to me and I find I do lack in skills and knowledge that prevent me from delivering even better care leading to an improved situation. I am sure that by following this course I will gain competence in my chosen work area.
This is not just a career choice. It is my life and I live my work through my life. Being expert at what I do brings coherence and power that helps patients sorely in need of assistance. I aim to be an expert in what I take on as my life’s mission.
What experience and skills do you have that will make you a suitable candidate for a Global Wales scholarship? *
Some students apply for higher level education before they take on work. In my case it is different. I am engaged as an occupational therapist at the Nair Hospital’s Multiple Sclerosis Society India. This has given me first hand experience of the difficulties patients face in their daily lives and how therapy ameliorates their situation. I am so touched I plan to make therapy my life’s goal.
That is not all; I have attended workshops and conferences such as the Workshop on ergonomics, Neuro Rehabilitation, Psychology talk for Teenage Mind and Bioethics course conducted by UNESCO and AIOTA. I joined the 55th Annual National Conference conducted by AIOTA.
I have done some research too. I included my studies and depicted outcomes in visual posters for which I received the 3rd place at the 56th Annual National Conference. For the 57th Annual National Conference I developed a poster on Cognition, Ability, Mobility and stability for which I gained the 3rd prize. My dedication cannot be doubted. Since areas such as cognition are not exact sciences, one must learn from experience and work of others and theories they have developed based on studies and work.
My past work and commitment make me the deserving candidate since I aim to pursue practical therapies based on studies and research.
How will you help to promote Wales as a study destination? *
I can see two ways to promote Wales as a study destination. The best way is through word of mouth recommendation. People trust those who have actual experience of studying and living in Wales and like to hear about it first hand. I am sure that should any individual wishing to pursue education abroad should seek my views I would recommend Wales.
The other way is through social media channels like Facebook and Twitter available to a much larger, global audience. I can post my experiences in Wales and in the University for everyone to see, read and learn from. I am sure that people are influenced by learning from experience of others. My comments and posts should have a positive impact.
Then there is the University’s website and other online forums and blog posts where I can share my views and publish informative pieces of interest to prospective students.
I also intend to participate in educational seminars and events to promote Wales as a study destination.
How do you think studying in Wales as a Global Wales scholar will help in your future career? *
I work as a therapist based on my degree in Occupational therapy and experience gained from workshops. This level of knowledge is certainly not adequate to play a pivotal and transformational role in my future career in which I hope to head an institution and provide the best services to patients in India.
It is not just professional services that are required. Patients need help from a human with perceptiveness to understand their specific situation, empathise and provide total support in managing a trying situation. I anticipate becoming a better individual in all respects once I complete this course.
I will get to know experts in this area, observe how they work, understand their approach and learn from their attitude to resolve issues patients face.
The course will open up channels of contact and communication with experts in this field and I will keep learning even after the course is over. I will learn when I handle students but with the backing of the studies at Wales, I will gain deeper insights and give more satisfaction.
