Scholarship essay for under-represented category – FEMALE

Please state the reasons why you would like to be considered for the scholarship and what motivated your interest in a Master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence at Queen Mary

My undergraduate studies were a natural progression of my interest in computer technologies. I was intrigued by just how wonderfully algorithms and neural networks work and I took on studies on my own. This was challenging since it is such an involved and complex area. It is best learned from experts. At the moment I have rudimentary knowledge of these topics that form part of data science. I wish to learn more and become competent with a certain degree of capability. This is the reason why I choose to pursue a Masters in Artificial Intelligence.

My work as data engineer at Infosys and as a programmer analyst at Cognizant Technology Solutions sparked my interest to proceed in this direction as my chosen career path. My work with AWS Glue Spark and other tools showed me the chasm that exists between my knowledge level and current state of matters in the field of artificial intelligence. I wish to close this chasm and get to the first level. From here I will be learning still more since AI is evolving and learning never stops.

I have applied for a scholarship to part-fund my education.  Out of millions in India only a few girls make it to the top in studies and in careers. I am proud to state that I am one of those women of India set on achieving the highest possible levels. I represent the quintessential Indian woman who is now breaking traditional boundaries and sets an inspirational example to other Indian women to show they are capable. I am applying in the female category which is underrepresented, especially referenced to India.

Will I be using my education for personal advancement? Yes I will. However, in the broader perspective, it is with a view to get to a position where I can help others. I remember an O’Henry story in which one tag line is “But can thim that helps others help thimselves!” In order to help my fellow women in India I will need to be strong and able to support them in words and in deeds from a position of advantage. This degree will be the starting point of my journey in life in which, apart from work, I will be a powerful voice and active personality to further women’s cause in India.
