Dentistry Statement of Purpose (SOP) sample for foreign university

Statement of Purpose

I have just completed my BDS from Bharati Vidyapeeth Dental College and Hospital in Navi Mumbai. However, detailed as the course is, I still find that I lack knowledge, especially in clinical areas. Dentistry and dental care is not an isolated science. This was brought home to me when I served as an intern at Lifeline Express and at the Dental College where I studied. A dentist must also have a thorough knowledge of the human body, diseases and impacts of various conditions on teeth and dental care. I feel that this course will give me precisely the knowledge that I lack. On completion of this course I am sure to be a better dental surgeon.

My time as an intern at Ceradent Dental Care gave me insights into how dentistry requires comprehensive care in a holistic fashion. I decided that the only way forward is to first gain professional competence on the clinical side as well before I start my practice.

Half knowledge is worse than no knowledge. I believe I have lots more to learn not only in dentistry but about the human physiology, diseases, health conditions and their inter-relationship. I wish to study as much as I can and be knowledgeable to take on challenges, unravel mysteries and deliver right diagnoses leading to right treatment of patients. My ultimate career goal is to start my holistic dental care clinic in Mumbai and offer affordable yet extremely competent overall services to Indians.

For four months I was an assistant dentist at Ceradent Dental Care where I worked to provide comprehensive care, kept learning, consulted with patients and collaborated with professionals. My internship at Bharati Vidyapeeth was more comprehensive. I carried out lab tests, assisted with therapeutic treatments and carried out prophylactic as well as dental extraction and restoration work more fully described in my resume. As on date I do have adequate competence to deliver dental services. It is difficult to be objective as a doctor and yet empathize as a human being. I learnt to balance the two.

I do take pride in authoring a review article on Oral Health and Declining Cognition. I earned commendation for volunteering to work on the Lifeline Express, the world’s first hospital on wheels. My paper presentation Recovery of Necrosed Pulp earned me top place. My video presentation Enucleation of Radicular Cyst won me the second position. My poster presentation Aesthetic at Minimal Loss got me the 2nd prize.

On the extracurricular side I won the first prize in Group Dance organized by the college. Student life was enlivened by taking part in Fashion Shows, Song programs, dumb charades and treasure hunt. I am also active in sports with Cricket and Football being my favorites. Table Tennis and Carom are close favorites. I played for the college cricket team.

My mother would always impress upon me the importance of dental health and that intrigued me enough to take on the BDS course.

I did well at Bharati Vidyapeeth, both academically and in other areas. I won first and second prizes for my paper presentations. In addition I took on various certification courses in Implantology, Transalveolar extraction, 3D Endodontics and participated in the 2nd Annual International Review on Head and Neck Cancers.

The clinical side of dentistry is important for me since I plan to deliver holistic dental care in future and for me, everything in the human body is connected.

Assistant Dentist at Ceradent Dental Care from August to December 2020; intern at Bharati Vidyapeeth during my undergraduate studies and a volunteer on Lifeline Express, a government operated hospital onwheels.

I learnt about history taking, examination, diagnosis, charting, treatment plan, care and sterilization of instruments, lab tests, use of antibiotics and therapies. I carried out extractions, CD, RPD, FPD, prophylaxis, restorations, RCT and topical applications of varnish. I learnt to be dexterous, manage funds and carry out atraumatic extraction besides gaining communication skills.

I worked as an Assistant Dentist at Ceradent Dental Care from August to December 2020. My work involved consultation with professionals, referring patients to seniors or to institutions after a preliminary exam, providing comprehensive care and keeping an eye on post operative treatments.

Yes, I have taken on a project and authored an article on Oral Health and Declining Cognition based on a study of selected group of patients.

I have not handled an independent project but did work for Rotract Club of our college and for the National Service Scheme besides volunteering to work on the Lifeline Express.

I have gained experience in diagnosis, in managing challenging situations, in rotary endodontics, advanced restorations and atraumatic extractions besides other dental procedures. I have interacted with patients in a public hospital environment and in a private clinic.

I have options on future course of career. I may get into a senior position in a large hospital in India where I could serve people and that would be satisfactory from career perspective as well as from the humanitarian side. I do dream of setting up my own hospital to offer advanced, world class holistic dental care in India but this is for the future, maybe a decade or so later.

So far my interest in research is limited but I am deeply intrigued at the connection between oral health and mental faculties. I may pursue this line of research.

I have been thinking about dentistry and the way dental care is delivered in India. There is a disconnect between dental care and overall systemic health. I hope to develop new methods or more comprehensive diagnostic methods. Systemic conditions impinge on dental health and the other way around too. There is much to be done in this area.

I am quite determined to go ahead with my objective.

While working associatively does have its benefits, I think it is good to apply one’s mind, take on challenges and try to find resolutions on one’s own. Yes, I have developed capacity for independent work.

I persevere. I take on challenges. I have developed good communication skills and manual dexterity through studies and practice in hospitals. I have also developed empathy as well as objectivity at work. Selfless service is another learned trait. Think a problem through is one thing I am getting good at. I have hands on experience in various dental procedures and am good to go.

In brief, this university offers the course I want and it has a reputation for excellence in academics. Nothing less will do for me.

Diversity has much to teach me. Mumbai, where I live, is a city of diversity and the University will be a continuum, expanding my horizons of understanding. People are different due to personality traits and culture. One must accept and appreciate as well as learn. Here in Mumbai we get on well with each other regardless of backgrounds and origins. I do not foresee any issues adjusting with the diverse student community; I look forward to it.

Yes, the curriculum is in consonance with my career goal and educational aspirations. I wish to gain deeper understanding and convergent knowledge of clinical aspects directly or indirectly relating to oral health. The university’s curriculum fits my expectations and the faculty is respected for its competence and a student-oriented approach.

I bring with me my experience in dentistry and treatments delivered here. I hope to expand the pool of knowledge and, maybe, others will find something of interest here. Apart from my academic contribution I also am a multi-dimensional individual with interests in fashion, dance, theatre as well as sports. I hope to be part of all these activities on campus.
